NIPS Studies the Agrarian Reform Extension Bill PDF Print E-mail

With the Agrarian Reform Law set to expire in June 2008, the Liberal Party (LP) requested the National Institute for Policy Studies (NIPS) to study the matter and to provide recommendations. In order to competently advise the Party’s leadership, NIPS formed a technical working group (TWG). It is composed of: Representatives Liwayway Chato and Erin Tañada, Senators: Manuel Roxas II, Francis Pangilinan and Benigno Aquino III. The TWG is co-chaired by Senator Rodolfo Biazon and NIPS board member, Gerardo Bulatao. Legislative staffers, NIPS staff and the LP director general are serving as its secretariat.

Rumored leadership changes in the November session opening of the House of Representatives led the National Institute for Policy Studies (NIPS) to hold a democracy forum on the political unrest at the Imperial Palace Suites on October 24, 2007.

Manolo Quezon III, political analyst and NIPS board member confirmed that Speaker Jose de Venecia, the longest serving speaker, was on his way out over the controversial National Broadband-Zhong Xing Telecommunications Equipment Company (NBN-ZTE) deal.

NIPS Tackles EPIRA Law in Cebu City PDF Print E-mail

Following the successful run in Davao City, NIPS took Cebu City as its next democracy forum stop on December 3, 2007 bearing the theme Making Sense of the Manila Peninsula Event, EPIRA Law, 2010 Elections, etc.: Quo Vadis Philippines in Transition? This time, University of the Philippines-Cebu hosted the event.

This time NIPS focused on two issues that were most relevant for Cebuanos - the Manila Peninsula Event and the EPIRA Law. For this run, NIPS invited former secretary Florencio Abad, Cavite Rep. Joseph Emilio Aguinaldo Abaya and NIPS chairperson and former representative JR Nereus Acosta.

NIPS Brings Democracy Forum to Davao PDF Print E-mail

For the first time in years, the National Institute for Policy Studies brought its democracy outside Metro Manila forum. This signaled the start of a series of democracy forums in key cities and provinces meant to dialogue with various sectors on issues of national importance and local significance. NIPS themed the maiden run in Davao City on November 22 2007 Prospects and Challenges of a Nation in Transition towards a New Leadership in 2010. The University of Mindanao in Matina, an academic center in the region with an 11,000 enrollment, hosted the event. LP president Franklin Drilon and Quezon Representative Lorenzo Tañada III teamed up for this forum.
